Will 'Suicide Squad' be the biggest movie of 2016?

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Taking a page from last year's "Furious 7," Warner Bros. "Suicide Squad" has become a juggernaut on social media, which could translate into huge box office numbers.

New data from comScore shows "Suicide Squad," which opens Aug. 5, is outpacing the rest of this year's remaining top films in terms of social media conversations. Its numbers are nearly double those of "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" and more than three-times that of "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them."

The impressive results are the product of Warner Bros.' marketing campaign that has involved several energetic trailers, along with artwork released exclusively on social media.

The campaign has seen the castmembers, including Margot Robbie and Jared Leto, promoting the film on social. And this past April, "Suicide Squad" got Snapchat users to latch on to a special lens filter dedicated to the movie.

Last-minute reshoots to "add humor" seldom work out well, so we'll see how that goes.

As much as I want the movie to be good, I almost hope that it sucks and convinces DC to move away from its "all grit all the time" aesthetic.

I don't expect it to make as much money as BvS, but I do think people will get better word of mouth, maybe doing better the second weekend than the first.

Leto's Joker is getting a lot of attention, but I submit that Harley is the character that fans are most eager to see. If she does well with it (and previews suggest that she will), then it has a good chance to be a huge hit.

So much so that they green-lit a movie featuring her character.

Kind of like Cameron going full-steam on four(!) Avatar sequels when it's not yet clear that anyone even interested in one of them.

DC is so desperate to reproduce the success of the MCU that they seem unable to build their own universe organically. We'll see how it plays out.

about both Leto and Robbie in the movie.

It remains to be seen if a bunch of villains in a movie can work.

I think the August release could hurt the overall box office, but overall it will do well and be judged a success. BvS maybe will have a higher overall gross, but also a higher cost and was subjected to scathing critical reviews and fan reviews.

Agree 100% that DC seems to be trying too hard. Marvel had great success with Iron Man, Capt America and Thor on their own first and then giving us The Avengers. While it would be seen as copying Marvel if DC had given us Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman in 4-5-6 movies first before Justice League, why not? It was hugely successful for Marvel.

If they say that they're following the X-Men route, the original X-Men movie had a great cast with Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Ian McKellan as Magneto, Halle Berry, Rebecca Romjim, Hugh Jackman, Anna Paquin and others. Henry Cavill was not very well known when he was cast in Man of Steel; Gal Gadot was a virtual unknown when cast as Wonder Woman; Ben Affleck is well known, but not regarded as a good actor (great director, though). So, that's hurt them as well.

I really wanted Dawn of Justice to be good but could tell early on that it would likely suck. On the other hand, I'm somewhat indifferent to Suicide Squad (never followed most of the characters), but so far it looks pretty good.
