I got to where I prefer the live versions of most songs. Take into account most live audience recordings are on tape from often less-than-ideal locations and I STILL like the live versions better. There are some terrific soundboards out there too.

but warts and all, Jimmy was hitting the smack pretty hard for a while there and they did have some lazy shows. Jonesy and Bonham were almost always on point. Plant had voice problems on and off.

I've seen Page and Plant together and separately many times since the 80s and they've always been terrific live but, by then, they were past most of their drugs and alcohol problems. I've seen JPJ once and that was easily one of the most incredible musical experiences I've ever had. That dude can play most any stringed instrument.

Maybe that is because I was a teenager then. I mostly liked Nirvana back then for the new music. I actually had a crush on Kurt Cobain back then (that shows what I odd ball I am). I know someone said Nirvana is over rated. I don't care how anyone else rates the bands I like. I like them because I do. I am still fond of Nirvana because they remind me of the 90's and good times being a teenager.

If you can, try and find some footage (very hard to find) of their Hell Freezes over reunion MTV gig...

Master musicians - every one of them.

They sound so good live its ridiculous.

Henley's voice is simply amazing.

Felders playing his ass off, so is Walsh.

They had a chemistry you cannot deny. Great songwriters as well...

I think they were the complete package. No studio tricks...

But I do get why people feel that way, I did as well, until I dug into their stuff and really started listening to it.

It helps that I'm a guitar player as well - can appreciate the simpleness of their songs and their playing style.

A ton of bands have changed their lineups. I fucking hate when a band produces a really good song, and people start saying "oh, they've been bloody awful since Jack Schitt got kicked out." And then you discover Jack Schitt played only on their first album and it got worse reviews than The Gospel According to Spinal Tap.

38. I think first we need to define "over-rated"
Fri Sep 2, 2016, 03:18 PM
Sep 2016

To me, over-rated means the band was wildly popular for no good reason. Bad musicians who were popular anyway. Most of what I'm seeing in this thread is just "I don't like them".

I can't stand Tool but I can't deny their musicianship. I think they are incredibly talented, I just don't like their songs. So I wouldn't call them overrated.

I love the Ramones but let's be real, they could barely play when they first started and learned just enough as they went along to get through albums and shows. Punk wasn't about virtuosity though so it didn't matter to me that they started out out pretty rough. They got good enough but I think wherever they are rated highly it's for what they meant rather than how they played.

I don't think there is a rating high enough to accurately describe how much I love Led Zeppelin. Every single song they ever did means something to me. (counting covers too) They were talented musicians before they ever formed LZ and I love everything they've done and most of what they've done since LZ.

Same goes for Rush, Pink Floyd, Napalm Death and Carcass.

I never liked Nirvana (or any of the 90s grunge really) but I sure love the effin hell out of Dave Grohl.

I guess it's all a matter of perspective so I don't know if this post is worth anything lol. Metallica through Master of Puppets was under-rated. Everything after was highly over-rated.

That's why the band sold more tickets than any band. More shows, more songs. Why they sell the shit out of the archives. And have bands covering their live shows doing well.

Sorry, but the Dead were America's greatest band. Look at every top touring act on the road, filling stadiums and amphitheatres across the country all have a strong Grateful Dead connection. The influence will exist forever.

The songs were too overproduced and came off almost novelty like.

KISS was a marketing ploy in the form of a mediocre cosplay rock band.

ABBA is awful, but gets a lot of support from drunken wedding guests.

Michael Jackson was a much, much better dancer than he ever was a singer....and his overall weirdness detracted from him as a whole. I know it might come off as too soon, but I'd say the same thing about Prince.
