I'm old, but I remember loving Puffa Puffa Rice. And Buc Wheats. There were others, but as I mentioned, I'm old. Help me refresh my memory.

Hot cereal was definitely chocolate malto-meal, which became hard to find as we moved from one area of the country to another...

(32,080 posts)I have gotten really picky about my oatmeal, too. No quick oats, please. I like 'em thick and chewy. Bob's Red Mill Extra Thick Cut are the best! I used to eat them with milk and sugar. Now, I prefer them grits-style--just some butter.. and maybe some salt.

(22,252 posts)cereal 'characters'? Sugar Bear, little chinese guy for sugar rice krinkles, and so on. Can't remember the main characters name but it was just one long commercial for Post products. However, the cartoons were pretty cute. Think there was an Indian kid for Post Toasties???

(32,080 posts)Just cover them with milk, and cook in the microwave for a minute. Best with some honey. Haven't tried with a nut milk, just cow juice, but I don't see why they wouldn't work with almond/cashew/coconut/whatever milk substitute.

A bit crunchy, hard on the teeth.
Leave them sit a while and THEN they were good; malty deliciousness.
KIX was good for cold cereal.
I lived on oatmeal, though.

she thought those sugared cereals were bad.
So we'd load up the Cheerios with table sugar.
Same in my house. We just dumped the sugar bowl all over unsweetened cereal. When we the occasional sweet cereal, we would just eat the whole box in a couple of days.

(32,080 posts)They were essentially frosted Rice Krispies, but unfortunately, they had a very racist mascot. Cap'n Crunch was a close second, followed by Life, which I still really like.
I am surprised by all of the love for Kaboom. I thought it was nasty--all that food dye, which was the dominant flavor of this cereal.

(25,292 posts)Grew up in the 60s when there seemed to be a new variety every week. When I was in high school, my house was the place to go for the munchies. The amount of cereals we had was crazy.
My poor kids got Cheerios and sometimes Honey Nut Cheerios.

Now I am a huge fan of oatmeal, either the 10 minute old fashioned kind or steel cut oats (which I cook in the microwave with cut up apple no sugar added)
I also like cream of wheat, cream of rice and hot grapenuts but I do not like grits as a breakfast food. I prefer them as a cheesy buttery calorie laden casserole.
My preferred cold cereals: Life (still) and all the varieties of Chex, plus shredded wheat.

(14,173 posts)But it has to be prepared properly first. That is, you put the cereal in then cover in milk and then let it sit for about a minute or two, which is difficult to do as a sugar addicted kid, to get it to that perfect texture. Not soggy but soft, sticky, and still a little crunchy.

I understand that Post has been spun off from Phillip Morris, so I recently started eating it again, although there are some generic knock offs that are quite good.

We always had a BIG Sunday 'dinner'.
Sunday night supper was light, "breakfast food'.
That's what we called cereal back then.
I remember Rice Krispies and Quaker Puffed Rice "SHOT FROM GUNS!"
With milk and LOTS of sugar.
And drinking the sugar laden milk from the bowl after I'd finished the cereal.

In college, I would just eat handfuls of honey Oh's or cinnamon nut crunch.
