(130,895 posts)that he received a ticker tape welcome home, in NYC, after his big win. I do recall his win, but don't recall the ticker tape part!

Considering the times, rabid Cold-War-Itis is plenty of explanation for the parade. U-S-A! U-S-A!

WBJC, maybe?
Wait -- by radio, do you mean over the air, or do you mean TuneIn?
Full disclosure: I was listening to WETA over the air on my kitchen system (a Pioneer tuner driving a pair of computer speakers) this morning.
I think it's this one:
ETA, Tuesday: Right digits, but in the wrong order, and too many of them. It's this one, the TX-608:
It's 1980-vintage: Pioneer TX-608

(130,895 posts)every morning at least 1 long piece!!! An hour or so after this, they played Beethoven's Pastorale! See: http://www.weta.org/fm/playlists DARN, I missed the Bruch Violin Concerto, @ 12:13 am!!!
Over the air. I've got an 'old' radio combo set up; when I don't, I listen over the air.

(22,252 posts)Once, I was at a Sing along Messiah at his church. He came strolling in and literally had to fold himself into their silly little theater seats. He was TALL!
I was present for what I am fairly certain was his last public appearance, in fall 2012. I was at the opening concert for the Cliburn Concert Series, which we have every year. This concert featured 4 prior gold medalists of the Cliburn competition playing four handed and eight handed versions of great piano solo works.
SO we are waiting on stuff to happen and I noticed the folks on my side of the hall getting all agitated and saw someone point to the wings at my left. There was Van, waiting to come on. When he began to come out, our whole side of the hall leapt to our feet because we knew he was coming out, then the rest of the audience did too. He was leaning heavily on the arm of the Music Director/chief conductor for the FWSO, and he gave a short and very sweet speech of love for FW, the FWSO, the Cliburn series and everybody cried. That had to have been exhausting and probably painful for him as he was gravely ill, but he looked like he was really happy to be there. That was in October and I think he died in February.
