1. I was in a lot of hurricanes (well, tai-funs) when the meal of the day was C-Rats.

Not Meals, Ready to Eat but the old school C-Rats in the olive drab cans! Lord only knows how old that food was! Or, what was in it!!! I seem to recall a lotta fatty stuff!

I will say, though, that the cans were SOLID and THICK and HEAVY--not like the thin cans of today. You really had to give it some goose to get those cans open...and there were no easy 'flip tops' either!

Did they come with a P-38 opener? It took a lot of force to get it started.

Our rations had a small pack of cigarettes and damp proof matches. Some of the stuff we had was OK, but some was greasy, tasteless and scary to look at. We joked that they were left over from the Korean War, but I suspect Vietnam era was their origin.

I think there were cigs in those things, too, and matches! And they just may have been Korean War era--one never knows!!!

I kept a high quality can opener in my desk--I lived life like a big dog!

8. Due to their age the post vet had to okay them for consumption, which lead to the horse meat rumor.

9. The vets also had to "vet" the food that was sold in overseas commissaries~!

A lot of the frozen stuff, especially, was "past its sell-by date" and the vet had to certify that it was still suitable for sale.

It's a funny thing that they task the vets with that, instead of someone in the medical or supply (logistics) field!

I'm on the Treasure Coast, about two miles from the intracoastal waterway. Current prediction includes 110 mph winds. I'm thinking I might not have hot coffee for a couple of days.

The biggest problem when you're without electricity, is what do you do to kill time? Without air condition it will get hot, muggy and buggy. You have to conserve energy for the inevitable cleanup. After that it's a question of staying hydrated.

I think I will be in better condition this go around because my summer gardening has helped me adapt to the heat. I last longer out there than my husband!

Geez, all this yammer about hurricanes has almost completely shoved Kim Kardashian out of the news.

You did say comfort.

Seriously, just ordinary snacks for comfort. Chips, peanuts, cookies or crackers to nibble on and water or juice.

17. After the derecho in 2012 there was a meat and dairy eating frenzy at my residence.

It was a hard task, but I managed fairly well. What I couldn't eat ended up in a large pot slow cooking on the stove to keep it edible.

Power was off for a week, but fortunately I have an LP stove in the cottage. No running water since there is a well pump. It took a day to clear trees from our drive to the county road, only to find the county road closed for another day.
