(20,186 posts)I'm sure it was invented by men. If they were going to care for a woman and her children, they want to know it was THEIR children. In plenty of species, males will kill offspring that they didn't sire.
*But, personally, I find a relationship with one person is challenging enough. I can't imagine the complexities of polyamory. Just not my thing.
