Is there any way to remove Skype and still maintain Microsoft services?

One of the services from Microsoft that I find indispensable is the one that allows you to download programs that you've purchased from them. But, for reasons that I don't understand, Microsoft activated my Skype account. When I tried to remove it, they forced me to check box a list of services that I would lose. Now I don't know what to do.

I don't like having any program that is vulnerable to hacking that can potentially get a shot of me before I've had my morning coffee.

Barbarians.

Anytime I log onto Hotmail, it starts Skype and makes me "available" on it. I change my status to "invisible" but it reverts back to available ("Online&quot every time I log in.

Not sure there's a fix for this.
