That is possibly why he is sometimes called Heavy Hector.

Scored for 16 fucking bass drums during the Dies Irae! That's what I would call Hell Fire. It's usually performed by one humongous bass drum. Either way, it really gets ones tummy wobbling.

Samuel Clemens said to a reporter on exiting a New York performance of one of Wagner's operas, "Wagner's music isn't as bad as it sounds."

So, there's that side as well.
