(12,132 posts)but the difference is so slim it might as well not exist at all. Blue Moon by the Marcels was either the first or second record I ever bought with my own money. I don't even remember what the B side was but I wore that side out.
The other record I bought was Centerfold by J. Geils Band. It's been so long I don't remember which was first but I bought them pretty close to the same time. Had to sneak them both into the house and listen with headphones late at night as that was good christian music.

(26,055 posts)a Doo-Wop song? If so, it gets my vote.

(5,227 posts)But I do think the Del Vikings' "Come Go With Me" is undeserving of its "no votes"
status. It's my runner up.

(29,817 posts)they only give me 10 blank spaces to use as poll options, so I can't list EVERY great doo-wop song, you know?
(I think I still have my 45 rpm records of Whispering Bells and Come Go With Me)

(Upon listening to the first 30 seconds of this song, which I've heard many, many times): It's not even close. That's so clearly the winner.

(29,817 posts)I inserted it in place of "Come Softly to Me" by The Fleetwoods, because that was the only song that received no votes, (despite the fact that it's a great doo-wop song too)

(374 posts)there was a dusty oldies show in Chicago hosted by Herb Kent "The Kool Gent".
He occasionally played a song sung by Dillard Croon titled "Darling, Believe me its you I love."
I have looked for years but have not heard that song since the mid 60s.
I accept any help, since there are thousands of doo wops I haven't heard.

(322 posts)But really there are no bad doo wop songs!
MiltonBrown
(322 posts)That one usually makes the best of lists.
There are so many great obscure doo wop songs too.
Five Discs- Never Let You Go
Many Many groups- Guardian Angel
There was so much romanticism in this genre. Kids singing love songs under street lamps trying to impress a girl or boy and trying to get a record contract.
Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers were the best IMO. Little brother Lewis Lymon and his Teenchords a close second for their harder hitting numbers. The Valentines, the Cadillacs, the Clovers, and EVERY bird known to humankind!
Denise by Randy and the Rainbows was another big hit- maybe the last big doo wop hit of the era.
montana_hazeleyes
(3,424 posts)I do love them all though!
red dog 1
(29,817 posts)since all the poll options have at least one vote, I can't replace any of them without "taking someone's vote away", and I won't do that.
Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers were an awesome doo-wop group, even if the "Teenagers" all looked much older than Frankie did.
Back to The 5 Satins, (from Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time)
# 90 The Five Satins, "In the Still of the Night"
(Written by front man Fred Parris)
Five Satins frontman Fred Parris wrote the song while on guard duty in the Army, and the group recorded it in the basement of a church in Parris's home town of New Haven, Connecticut.
The roughness shows: The drums & piano are muffled, the alto sax cracks during the solo, and the backing vocals wander off-key.
But the primitive sound - and the fact that only four of the Five satins were even present for the session - can't keep "In the Still of the Night," originally released as a B side, from being a sublime, definitive piece of doo-wop."

(97,266 posts)While it was a doo-wop song, it certainly doesn't belong in the top 10 doo-wop songs of all time, imo.

(29,817 posts)"Gypsy Woman" is a good song.
Even though Frank Zappa died back in 1993, The Persuasions are still around and still tour
(They play in MA on June 18 and on June 19 they play Levitt Pavilion in Steelstacks Bethlahem, PA)
