Do you put an extra R in the word when you talk about sherbet?

I don't know about you, but for years, even right up to today, I thought "sherbert" was an 8 letter word and a homonym of Ernie from Sesame Street saying something reassuring to his roommate...

"Sure, Bert"

Why, even my spell check doesn't force me to go back to "sherbet," as if it's a regional spelling variation for sorbet.

Like the Rustbelt for cleaning something with soap and water - worsh. Or the first President, George Worshington.
