The history of Sams Grill dates back to 1867, when an Irishman, Michael Molan Moraghan, began selling fresh oysters at a stall in the open-air market at the base of California Street. By the 1890s Moraghans company had developed into the Citys leading seafood establishment, with his specialty focused on local oysters, he became known as The Oyster King. The business continued to thrive as the Burlingame Oyster Co. and in 1922, Samuel Zenovich acquired the oyster company that became known as Sams. In 1936, the restaurant was purchased by Frank Seput, who formalized the establishments current name, Sams Grill & Seafood Restaurant. The Seput family owned and operated Sams from 1932 to 2005. Frank Sr., Frank Jr., Walter and Walters son Gary oversaw more than 70 very productive and formative years that helped establish what Sams Grill is remembered for today. Phil Lyons bought the restaurant in 2005 and retired in 2014, staying true to Sams colorful history. After many years as part of the Sams family, Peter Quartaroli became managing partner with the support of a group of loyal customers and investors.

(16,954 posts)at the Embarcadero a few years ago and had one of their platters -- so very fresh, and at a great location (we had the Kumamotos because I had seen some chefs talking about them and was curious). I learned about Hog Island Oysters after watching a Martha Stewart video years ago. On another trip North last year, we went to Bodega Bay where they filmed the Hitchcock movie, The Birds, and during that trip drove down Pacific Coast Highway past the Hog Island Oyster Co. farm which was packed. It was bumper-to-bumper traffic leaving that location and up and down that stretch of highway.

We'll try Sam's on another trip. I've seen that building in one of our trips. Such a truly beautiful area and fantastic city. Love San Francisco and the whole Bay Area. (also love the Cheese Board by UC Berkeley -- great gourmet pizza that changes every day). The original Peet's Coffee is right up the street from there with a little museum of Peet's beginnings. Omg, love those trips.
Sam's for clams is on the list.
