The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsIt took us weeks, but we finally came up with a name for our kitten.
Snug the Joiner, because he is snuggly and sociable, and because Mr. Femmedem had acted in A Midsummer Night's Dream, where Snug the Joiner is cast as a lion in the play-within-a-play.
Sometimes it takes us forever to name cats. We called the last one Gray Girl for months, until we finally gave in and named her Gigi.
Some of our other cats have been or are Mia Feral (not really ours, but we've been feeding her for fifteen years now), Victor (named on the night Obama won), Bluto and Elfie.
How about you? Got any fun pet names?

(22,270 posts)but Rumpleteaser quickly became 'the princess' because she just has that attitude. We lost Jerry sadly but their older half brother Squeaker was so named because that is the only sound he could make - never learned to meow. Their mother was a very quiet cat.
Our older cats are Lewis, Clark and CatZilla. We named Lewis because he was first out of the bed area and was a big explorer. We then decided if we had Lewis, then somebody had to be named Clark. CatZilla was the biggest of them when they were all nursing but once they got on kibble, Lewis became the Big Boy so CatZilla was no longer appropriate but we still liked it. So 14 years later he is still CatZilla or most of the time just Z.
femmedem
(8,207 posts)CatZilla, that's perfect. And Lewis and Clark are great names for explorer kitties. Snug was almost named Marco as in Polo.

they said 'if you don't want him bring him back. Turns out Monster would get angry and his anger would build. Then he would attack me. All I had done was pat him a few times. He did not use his claws as weapons so much as he would bite. But he was missing a fang so he could not puncture my skin though he tried. He would bite once a week at first. Then once every two weeks. Then once a month. The rest of the time he was a darling and loved to cuddle. He would sleep in my armpit. I had ptsd. I figured he had ptsd. So I named him Monster (Mon-ter as a nickname)and kept him. He was a great cat. I miss him.

(65,487 posts)feisty and dominant in her litter. Her white color and jumping around nature led me to try to name her "Palomita." In Spanish that means "little dove," but it is also their word for popcorn, because when popped it resembles little doves.
But the name Palomita never fit her. She ended up being Lucy, short for Lucia (which is pronounced loo-chee-uh). Sometimes I call her "Chia Pet."
My tortie Maine Coon (Tango) got her name from the tangerine shade of her orange markings, because Tango sounds more like a cat name than Tangerine does. Tango has one orange foot (right forepaw) and one orange toe on her back left foot. Her muzzle is striped orange on one side, black on the other, and her mouth has alternating orange and black sections, so it looks like one of those checkerboard cookies:
femmedem
(8,207 posts)Tango fits a cat's grace, too.
Funny how a kitten's personality is so clear early on. Except I had one who fooled me: I thought he was mellow and loving when I found him in the pound, but it turned out he was sick with pleurisy. Once he got better he was a high strung hellion!
I loved him (he's gone now, after eighteen years), but I'm not exaggerating when I say he was high strung. It took him four years to work up the courage to sit on the couch, because the soft footing scared him.

(1,725 posts)He's a very large, sweet, all black rescue and quite crazy. He started out as "Binky" but his new name fits him very well. His brother Bussie the Snowman (white and orange Polydactal cat) loves him as well as his sister Miss Sally Jane. They are all rescues and the love of our lives.
femmedem
(8,207 posts)I've got a soft spot for polydactyls. Our Bluto had 26 toes. Ours are all rescues, too. We live in a low-income neighborhood where there are a lot of abandoned cats or cats who get lost because they're not neutered or spayed. We also do a lot of neighborhood trap, neuter and release if we can't figure out who owns them.

(7,639 posts)He didn't want to pay vet bills. He had named the cat Petie because he was black and white with a kind of bullseye pattern on his face, like the dog in Our Gang. Petie was a very large, long-haired fixed male. He was very laid back and sweet so I started calling him Petie Sweetie. Eventually that turned into Petie Pie.

(8,207 posts)I found out that one of my cats, Victor, had been abandoned by my neighbors when they decided they'd rather have a dog. A year later their adolescent son saw him in our window and yelled out, "Papi!" (But they still didn't want him.)

(34,447 posts)me all the time, whether he was hungry or not, hence Otis after the elevator company. We named another one of our favorite rescues Howie, which was short for Hell on Wheels. He was the most awesome cat; one in a billion. I lost him to cancer 10 years ago at age 18 & I still miss that Tuxedo character. I think it ran in the family because his littermate was named Taz.

(2,338 posts)For the kitty who adopted me. Showed up in my backyard 3 years ago. A beautiful grey tuxedo cat. He kept coming back day after day for two weeks.
I managed to get him to my vet. He had a chip and it turned out the woman who he was registered to essentially dumped him 3 months earlier and had since moved. The vet contacted her and she said she didn't want him. That infuriated me. On the other hand, I was already in love with him and knew I would never let him be homeless again.
I was in a bad place emotionally when he showed up, so we kind of saved each other.
I renamed him Scavenger because he had to survive scavenging out on his own.
He's quite the content kitty now and happy with my two other adopted kitties, Jessie and Sophie.
femmedem
(8,207 posts)I can't understand people who abandon animals, especially if they've gone to the trouble of microchipping them. I'm glad that in this case the story turned out well! (And Scavenger is a terrific name.)

(8,761 posts)He is a beautiful black and white tuxedo cat. I live way out in the country so someone must have dropped him off out here. First time I saw him, he was glued to my dogs face as my dog was running across the yard. It took a while, but they became best friends. I fed Mr. Lucky for a yr outside before he would come in. Now I spoil him so much and of course, he sleeps with me. He is so photogenic - I've taken hundreds of photos of him.

(8,207 posts)Snug's feral momma is a swirly mix of gray and orange. She's colored like a geological formation. We haven't named her yet--she's in our bathroom waiting to be spayed next Friday--but maybe she'll be a Marble, too.

(22,149 posts)We currently have about 20, at last count. Three indoor, the rest are supposed to be barn cats, but spend most of their time on the front porch. All are neutered/spayed, shots, wormed, and adored. One of the indoor guys is Cisco, the Siamese mix. He showed up at my barn in CA, soaking wet and starving. I started throwing him dog treats, and was calling him Sis, till I could get close enough to determine he was a boy. Renamed Cisco, and gravitated indoors when he started climbing the rose trellis up to the roof. That was 12 years ago, and he sleeps with me every night. Then there is Simone, the calico, and Chubby--the husband had already named him. Two of the outdoor kitties are Millie and Mocha. They showed up here in KY, at 2-3 months old, and were both pregnant before 6 mo. Millie's kittens were named for trees (get it? Millie, sawmill, trees.) Olive, Ranger, Rowen, Juniper. Mocha's are coffee names: Kona, Hazelnut, Java, Irish, Kahlua. Miracle started out as Latte, but got renamed after crawling up under the truck one rainy day, and rode 30 miles to the grocery and back with the husband. I heard this tiny little meow coming from under the truck when he came back home. It's a Miracle! Hannah, Jessie, Stripe, and Rio were all barn strays from my farm in CA that moved with me back to KY. Calla showed up here starving AND pregnant and had a litter under the hay. Her kittens are Charlie, Casey, and Cheyenne. The husband's other cat, Melissa, had two litters before arriving here and getting spayed: Sebastian, Simone, Sammy, and Siva. (the last two now deceased). And then, Zena, Tux, Zip, and Zoom. There may be somebody I forgot.
A few that are gone, but much loved over the years were Murphy (I was working for a vet's office on Murphy Lane), Nigel (two ladies approached me in a Pet Smart parking lot and said, if you can't take this kitten, he's going to the pound--best cat EVER), Gus, Koty, Paco, Quinn, Tasha, Teal, Rogue, Klaus, Seth, Guenter, Buster, and Guy. (the United Nations of cats). Guy flew across country in a crate between my feet after my sister died. Buster was my mom's cat, and was flown across country after she died. I still feel pangs thinking about them all.
We have a little farm in the country, so people feel free to dump cats here. And even though I keep saying, NO MORE CATS, I'm a sucker for a starving stray. We go thru a 40 lb bag of cat food a week, and I give my own shots, worming, and flea dip.
femmedem
(8,207 posts)I had a Koty, too, decades ago. He was one of the best, and I still miss him. I lived out in the country then, and Koty's mom somehow made her way to our back door, very very pregnant. She had her kittens in our bed about three nights later while we slept.

My neighbors have a white toy poodle named Yuki (Japanese for "snow" . One of the funniest things I ever saw was their teen son take the dog to the nearby dog park. He was wearing shoes with the wheels on the bottom. Yuki was running as fast as she could while pulling him behind her. She sure musta liked the dog park!
Friends used to have a Westie terrier named Spartacus. Mr friend said that he had wanted a bigger and tougher type of dog so that the name would fit. They felt better when I told them that terriers might be small, but they were bred to be tough as nails.
