The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsGuess I'm supposed to introduce myself.
Hi!
Just a dude in the midwest who's been reading some of the stuff on here since we shifted to Idiocracy with our new election. Decided it was time to jump into the fray. I'm in the middle of re-reading the Dark Tower series before the movie comes out next month, hence the username.
Anyway, cool site.

Cuthbert Allgood
(4,921 posts)(I need to finish this series and read something else for my own good, really )
saidsimplesimon
(7,888 posts)finish. It is a triump of fictional literary expression. imo
Cuthbert Allgood
(4,921 posts)and I love that about it. Best thing King has written in my opinion. I've just been hammering through them this summer and they have kind of taken over my thinking to a large extent. Which isn't always bad, but I need to break things up soon.
MuseRider
(34,109 posts)I too have read them twice. Like reading Game of Thrones you get completely caught up in them, for a very long time!
Great name choice. Movie out soon, I am dying to see what they do with it.
Cuthbert Allgood
(4,921 posts)and the casting looks like they are pulling from at least 2 and probably 3 books. But I like the casting decisions so far.
MuseRider
(34,109 posts)just enough of them to provide non readers with a feel for them then the movie is more of what comes after or late in the books? I have not read a lot, wanted to see it all fresh but like you I was concerned about that too. Not sure how this will work. I would have loved to have seen it done like GOT was done. More detail and they could have done all the books.
I just this morning finished re-reading the trilogy that started with Mr. Mercedes since that starts on August 9th I believe.
It is time to read something new again. Whew, I love re-reading books but have re-read too many lately.
Cuthbert Allgood
(4,921 posts)Not sure how to tell you what the movie is without spoilers. I guess I could say that one of the trailers had Roland with the Horn of Eld, if that helps without saying too much.
MuseRider
(34,109 posts)I cannot wait to see it.
Cuthbert Allgood
(4,921 posts)Then you clearly understand what they are doing with the movie which I think is a nice idea to give them flexibility.

The Polack MSgt
(13,188 posts)and have so far managed to avoid trips between November and March.
So have a spotted cow for me CA
Cuthbert Allgood
(4,921 posts)Spotted Cow is, in my opinion, New Glarus' worst beer and yet it gets all the love. It's a nice bridge from non-craft beer to craft beer, but once you're in, they have so many better options.
If you have the chance, try their Two Women, or Road Slush, or, if you like wheat beer, their Bubbler.
I'm originally from colder areas, so winters here aren't so bad.
The Polack MSgt
(13,188 posts)My brother is a chef and a beer snob. So his beer adjective game is strong.
I drink Stag, without apologies
Cuthbert Allgood
(4,921 posts)I just don't get the Spotted Cow love, I guess. To each their own. But try some other New Glarus next time you're in state. You won't be disappointed.

Welcome to DU, CA!
Unfortunately, I'm not rich enough to be as snobby as I want to be but I make do.
Cuthbert Allgood
(4,921 posts)Plus I have gout, so I have to limit the amount of beer I drink.
But there just isn't time to drink crappy beer.

Not my first discussion board (though this one has nicer threaded discussions than a lot of them).

(4,921 posts)It is King's attempt to create a world like Tolkien did. There are seven novels and then he added an eighth to fill some voids. It also relates really closely to about 7 of his novels and somewhat to a whole lot more.
The original seven novels average about 800-900 pages.

(3,208 posts)I saw that user name and had to check out your post! The wheel has turned three times for me and it has been more wonderful each time!
I am sort of excited for the movie! But at 95 minutes I may have to wait to rent it on Amazon (can't go that long sitting or not using the bathroom!)
Do you follow Sai King on twitter or facebook? he has been making some good comments! And he got blocked by the orange one!! LOL
I am in the mid-west also! We are roasting this week. But my house is in the path of totality for the eclipse so I am pretty happy for that!!!
Cuthbert Allgood
(4,921 posts)Currently past the middle of Wolves and I remember not liking that novel as much first time, but really like it this time.
I will have to follow Sai King.
I am headed down to the Carbondale area for the eclipse. Have never been in the totality. My wife thought I was crazy when I asked here at the beginning of the year if she wanted to go so I set it up with some friends. Just a couple weeks ago she told our son that she might go. I informed her all bed space was claimed and she lost her right to first refusal.
