What About Bob is a great comedy - I've probably seen it at least 20 times
(From what I read about the making of that film, Richard Dreyfuss and Bill Murray had their differences and didn't really like each other)

I'll never forget watching that movie with my parents in Miami, on opening night. We didn't understand why they were passing out coconuts outside but after the movie I wanted 2.
I only appreciate severely over the top comedy or extremely subtle. Mid level sitcom caliber comedy does absolutely nothing for me, which is the reason I haven't watched a televised comedy series in decades, other than The Simpsons.
A HERETIC I AM
(24,367 posts)When our family lived in Australia because like many other British comedies, it was a staple for Aussie TV back then.
We came back to the states in 1974 and shortly after PBS started broadcasting the Flying Circus but NONE of my nor my brothers friends knew anything about them.
When Holy Grail hit the theaters I think this was still the case. People just didn't really know what to think.
I remember like it was yesterday when me and my brother went to see the movie when it came out. As soon as the film started we began giggling because we KNEW something silly was going to happen. People in front of us turned and looked at us as if we were nuts because nothing had happened yet.
And then....the opening credits started rolling...serious music, black screen....
Followed shortly by the fucking subtitles in faux Swedish!
We just lost it.
It took the rest of the audience a bit to catch on, but from then on it was a laugh fest.
We had to go see it 2 more times over the next week just to catch all the dialogue because so much of it was drowned out by laughter.

I've seen it many many times.
Robin Williams was great!
Nathan Lane was great!
Gene Hackman was great!
Hank Azaria was great (as Agador the butler)
I love the part after Val's real mother arrives, and Nathan Lane's cover is blown playing Val's mother.
Hackman (Sen. Keeley) still doesn't quite "get it" that Nathan Lane is actually a man,
SEN KEELEY: "I don't understand"
so his wife goes over to Nathan Lane & pulls off his wig & says "He's a man!"
and Hackman as Sen. Keeley, then says "I feel like I'm going insane!"

(32,634 posts)I don't have an answer because my tastes keep changing.
As I kid I thought "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" was the funniest movie I'd ever seen. But I watched it again recently and I hardly laughed at all.
In the 80's I thought anything by Woody Allen was hilarious. But now I won't even watch them.
"Blazing Saddles" used to be a favorite, but I've seen it so many times that I don't even laugh at the jokes any more.
Probably I'd say the same for "Young Frankenstein" even though I think Mel Brooks is a genius.
Current humor - at least the recent movies - seem to be so raunchy that I can't even enjoy them, and I'm no prude.
I find myself laughing the most in the animated movies that are aimed for kids but also have stuff for the adults to enjoy. I'm talking about the "Shrek" movies, "Finding Nemo," "Tangled," "Monsters Inc.", "Up," the "Toy Story" movies, so you get the idea. They seem to be very fresh and clever, but they're not necessarily intended as comedy movies.

(27,797 posts)Always look on the bright side of life
If life seems jolly rotten,
There's something you've forgotten!
And that's to laugh and smile and dance and sing
Always look on the bright side of life
For life is quite absurd
And death's the final word
You must always face the curtain with a bow!
Forget about your sin - give the audience a grin,
Enjoy it it's the last chance anyhow!
So always look on the bright side of death!
Just before you take your terminal breath.
Life's a piece of shit,
When you look at it
Life's a laugh and death's a joke, it's true,
You'll see it's all a show
Keep 'em laughing as you go.
Just remember that the last laugh is on you!

(40,416 posts)First, it is utter lunacy, like the Marx Brothers, the Goon Show, or Monty Python. But Kramer takes things well beyond madness. It's like he directed it by screeching, "Not mad enough! More madness! Pile on madness on madness!" It is a film, when I first saw it -- in Cinerama, no less -- that I literally ended up on the floor laughing my ass off.
Second, it has scenes like this! I give you the incredible Jonathan Winters, with Arnold Stang.
This is high art humor.

(14,565 posts)Before or after seeing that movie. I literally didn't know anyone did that until the theme showed up in various media. I was probably deep into my teens already. The only survivor is Blazing Saddles, 18 days later you have memorized the movie, every scene, every word spoken, just as all on board have.
I haven't watched it since, never even wanted to until recently, so someday soon I'll watch it again, I wonder how much I remember?.
