(4,268 posts)It said to press a key to get transferred to a live person. I can see a good number of naive people falling for it (percentage wise overall) since the script sounded professional and 'legit' until she said "cops". lol
The scary part is that somehow the call got through to my extension.

(7,911 posts)For 50 years I mailed my tax returns on April 16 (or whatever day came after the postmark deadline date). Not once in that 50 years did the IRS ever even notice that I was always a day late.
Scammers from Nigeria, however, I'd really be concerned about. They might actually send the sheriff to your door!!!!!!!! Better pay them quick!!!! I'm series!!!! This is no joke!!!!!!!

(23,226 posts)...that there was an administrative one-week grace period for filing your taxes without penalty. And we coded returns accordingly from April 15th to 22nd. Now, I don't send my return in until the 22nd (unless I'm due a refund, which never happens any more), and have never had a problem.

Of course, we could stop this abuse but the people most likely to be a victim of the abuse are the ones who keep voting for the GOP tools who prevent consumer fraud laws from being passed.
So I guess they get what they deserve

(53,778 posts)I've gotten a couple of those scam calls too.
I play along when they threaten to come to my door and arrest me.
I ask how much do I have to send?
Then I ask the guy, "Okay, if you're going to arrest me, what's my address?"
They hang up then.

(11,686 posts)They were offering to help me with the problems my SMART PHONE was having. At the time I had an old TracFone flip phone. Another time I got a call about the problems with my computers internet speed. I had a computer but I was not connected to any internet servers and they just kept trying to tell me they would help me fix the speed. Oh, Yeah, I did get a call from the "IRS" telling me I owed money and if I did not pay now they were going to start legal procedures. I hung up then tried to call back the number and it was a disconnected number. I had called back out of morbid curiosity. I called my brother who is a tax lawyer and he told me that had been going on a lot and I did the right thing.

(50,557 posts)Call them back and tell them you don't have any money, so you won't be paying your tax bill.
When they tell you that you're going to be arrested, offer to give them directions:
Take Interstate 85 north of Durham, NC, to exit 189. Turn north off the ramp and drive to Veazey Road. Turn left onto Veazey, then go to State Road 100. Turn left, then take the second right. It's a gated community, so just tell the gate guard what you're there for and he'll be sure to take you right where you need to go.
(And he will, too...that's directions to the prison Bernie Madoff is in.)
