Black Cat Love: From reunions to adoptions, their reputations precede them on the day set aside to appreciate them

Today is Black Cat Appreciation Day. And in a strange twist of fate, a black cat from New York is spending part of it in Texarkana.

Luna was traveling through Texarkana with her human family when she became lost while they were staying in a local hotel. The family looked for Luna but had to leave without her when she was nowhere to be found, said Charles Lokey, director of Texarkana Animal Care and Adoption Center.

A day later, Luna was found hiding under the box springs on a hotel bed. Her family was contacted and they will be returning to Texarkana today to pick her up, Lokey said.

On Wednesday, Luna was hanging out in the lobby of the adoption center.

there's something about the way their eyes dominate their face

"Skittles" was one of them

my boyfriend at the time worked with a guy who, despite being very allergic to cats, took pity on a stray black adolescent cat with a broken leg - he put him in a box, strapped him to the back of his motorcycle and brought him to us. The vet did surgery on the leg and the kitty wore a cast for a while and then he was good to go.....he was a big cat, weighed 23 - 25 pounds at his checkups. Skittles passed on my fifth anniversary on DU.

about 18 months old. He used to follow me from a distance on my walks, and he would hang around to visit my cats through the window. It took a few months, but I finally coaxed him close enough to pet him--and grab him.

He is a perfect love.

Ace was by far the best cat we ever had.
Or had us.
Whatever.

Black as the Ace of spades except for a tiny white star on his belly that you couldn't see unless he was on his back.

I was in the kitchen, sneaking a midnight snack of chocolate ice cream with melted peanut butter poured over. Try it, it's crack.

Suddenly I had that 'Am I being watched?' feeling.
I looked out the patio door and saw nothing.
Then I looked down and saw just two yellow eyes.
Scared the shit out of me.

I eased the door open a bit to see what it was and he was in like a flash. Now I had this black cat in the kitchen and he was...butting and rubbing and twining in and out around my ankles and purring and butting and rubbing.
He loves me!

We had a German Shepherd, so I put the cat in the garage with an old blanket and a bowl of water.
I went to bed.

The next morning I told Miz t. what had happened.
Nasha was usually OK with other dogs and cats, but I didn't want to take any chances.
"Put the leash on Nasha, and I'll bring the cat (unnamed at this point) out and we'll see what happens."

So Nasha came in from one side of the room and I brought the cat in from the other side and the cat wriggled out of my grasp and headed straight for Nasha and...started rubbing and butting and twining in and out around her ankles.

The damn cat loves dogs.
Nasha was 'meh'.
She couldn't care less.
The only 'unhappy' part of this is that Ace loved Nasha, and it was unrequited.
Ah well.

Ace was a HUNTER!
He brought me mice and SQUIRRELS!
I'm serious.

Years later he developed diabetes. I gave him an insulin injection every morning.
He couldn't have food until after his injection.
If I was lazy, slept late, whatever, he'd be after me.
"Come ON! Give me the shot. I'M HUNGRY!"

Helluva cat.
There'll never be another like him.
