Mama at home in TN always put chopped sweet pickles (I think little sweet gherkins) in tuna and chicken salad, and that stuck with me. I really love the store-bought bread & butter variety (my folks made those then I was a kid).

I like using the Balsamic vinegar in all sorts of dishes to add a little tartness and to help me cut down on salt. Getting older (70 now) has forced me to make dietary adjustments, but I'll find ways to re-calibrate the taste to old-timey with something, LOL.

Treat it like a French Dip. Toast the bread add a thin layer of spicy stone ground mustard sometimes.

Of course a classic tomato and grilled cheese is never bad. I actually believe good ole American slices make the best grilled cheese if you want it gooey. Always makes me feel like a kid.

My mother would grind the liver, add an egg, some salt, pepper, and sage. Form into 1" to 1 1/2" balls and drop into a clear beef broth. I use beef base ("Better than Boullion&quot with a little dried parsley. Get the broth very hot, and drop the balls into it - they cook very quickly.

Let me know if you find a good recipe. My Mother never would write anything down.

You might enjoy the German onion soup

It's called griessbrei (cream of wheat) soup - sounds weird, by the griessbrei just adds some body.

Chop some onion(s), 1 large or more, depending on your patience with chopping.
brown onion in some oil (burning will make them bitter)
Add beef broth, bring to almost boil
add some cream of wheat - I use instant. Too much makes pudding, so just use your best judgment. If it gets too thick, just add more broth.

Okay, that's it from me. Enjoy!

It would be the Black Forest ham on Italian herb and cheese, toasted with cheddar, lettuce, tons of black olives, mayo, southwest sauce, one small stripe of mustard, Parmeson cheese.

Dipped in my Moms turkey rice soup, best I've ever found, I throw a half tablespoon of Johnny's seasoning salt in each bowl (it's a big bowl) and it's ambrosia.

I can substitute a ham and cheese on a sub and chicken soup if I have to but it's not quite the same.

Now I'm hungry again.

I've never really liked turkey except for the dark meat, I have that go to sleep instantly problem when I eat it right after it's cooked.

But in soup or Sammie's not a problem as long as it's a day later, I don't know why but when it's fresh, ZZZZZZZZZZZ.

which can cause sleepiness. I've always experienced that, too, but some experts say the amount of tryptophan is too small. Others say we get drowsy 'cause we eat too damn much - making blood glucose go sky high. I'm prone to agree with that latter theory because I get sleepy after any large meal.

Makes me want to go to Cracker Barrel this Thursday for turkey and dressing!

So I never over ate, but it was instant sleep anyway.

I think milk also has that in it.

I am not very creative.

But my favorite soup is called "Egyptian red lentil soup", I have a vegetarian cookbook with that recipe. It is so good on a cold day!

It's now a Sushi bar.

Our now defunct deli made their Matso soup with one huge ball in the bowl.

Now, no alcohol, tomato basil soup and honey ham or turkey on rye, dressed up well.

A lot softer and safer for a 70-YO tummy (and brain)!
