Mandan, ND (KX News) - Local oil workers protested in Mandan today to show support for the first nationwide oil worker strike in over 30 years.

Workers from nine refineries are asking companies to prioritize workers health and safety over profits.

This demonstration is not about money.

Anytime there is a labor bargeining session, a lot of people get the impression that it's usually about wages and benefits But rather, about the work load many oil workers have to deal with.

FULL story at link. Video doesn't seem to work.

Sign this petition to tell oil industry management and federal, state and local officials that we all want safe refineries. Safe workplaces don't just protect workers, but also the communities where we live and work. Please support the USW Oil workers in their efforts to secure a fair contract that will protect the health and safety of workers and communities!

To: Oil Industry Management and Federal, State, and Local Officials

I support the USW Oil Workers in their efforts to secure a fair contract that will protect the health and safety of workers and communities. The oil industry is the richest in the world, but their greed and their bad faith bargaining has stalled efforts to improve conditions in their workplaces. The industry has refused to address serious health and safety issues including:

• the daily occurrence of fires, leaks, emissions, and explosions,
• understaffing at refineries that forces workers to put in excessive overtime,
• brutal and dangerous scheduling practices, and
• unsafe reliance on outside contractors.

It’s time to get serious about the safe operation of these facilities and get the hard-working, highly-skilled members of the United Steelworkers back to work.

The oil industry must stop violating the rights of their workers and come to the table in order to bargain a fair contract and end this unfair labor practice strike. Until they do so, we also call on state and federal officials and our elected leaders to conduct serious safety investigations at our nation’s oil refineries and take all legal actions possible to protect the health and safety of refinery communities.
