Something other than a person this time!



Still working from photos. This one is from a photo I took around 2005 in Cairns, Australia. The original photo had about a half dozen pelicans in the background and ugly greenish mud flats taking up the middle third of the picture.

5. Very nice. What art app are you using?

I've dabbled with some free ones. One that comes free with Samsung called Penup. The others I've played with are Infinite Painter and Sketchbook. I can use the S-Pen that came with my tablet.

6. Fresco - part of the Adobe suite.

Because I retired from a university I get to take classes for free - and many of those in the art department come with a subscription to the Adobe suite. Otherwise it would be too pricey for me.

I'm currently working on a BFA in photography - and following my instructor's suggestion that I try using a tablet for photo editing. Since the 90s I've edited almost exclusively with the touchpad on my laptop (using PaintshopPro - less than 1/10 the cost of Photoshop). Since I'm working on the non-photography part of the BFA this semester, I decided to use my professor's suggestion to play with a painting app while I'm waiting for classes to start.

It's got 3 sets of digital pens: pixel, vector, and live. Live includes watercolor and oil. I've got a miniscule amout of experience with oil and none with watercolors - but based on understanding the theory I think the app mimics watercolor pretty well (except that the watercolors stay "wet" forever. I don't know if I'll play with the oil classes before classes start next week.

I've done a lot of phot editing (and restoration), so manipulating pixels is not new. But I'm having fun exploring a new digital media.

It definitely has more expression than the original photo - mostly a happy accident, since I wasn't deliberately trying to give it an expression.
