TCM Schedule for Friday, June 30, 2017 -- What's on Tonight: TCM Special Theme - European Vacation

In the daylight hours, TCM finishes a couple of the Gay Hollywood themed films, and then spends the rest of the day celebrating Susan Hayward, born Edythe Marrener in Brooklyn, exactly 100 years ago today! Then in prime time, TCM finishes their month-long European Vacation. Tonight, we are all over Europe. Enjoy!

The original Broadway production of "Cabaret" opened at the Broadhurst Theater on November 2, 1966, ran for 1165 performances and won the 1967 Tony Award for the Best Musical. Joel Grey recreates his role in the movie for which the won the 1967 Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical. In preparation for his revival of the role of the MC (Master of Ceremonies) in the film, Grey did extensive research in order to achieve a completely authentic German accent.

Tommy Kirk was best known as an actor from the Disney studios, specifically, the Spin & Marty serials of the original Mickey Mouse Club, and The Shaggy Dog.

Prior to filming, Susan Hayward took the opportunity to study Lillian Roth's vocal style, tone and delivery when Miss Roth performed in Las Vegas. Moreover, the two women became friends during the production.

The world's first rodeo was held July 4, 1869 in Deer Trail, Colorado. Cities such as Pecos, TX, Prescott, AZ, and Payson, AZ have also laid claim to the title, but Deer Trail has been officially recognized by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) as the first.

American tourists wreak havoc while traveling through Europe.

The tourists' return flight from Rome back to New York is TWA flight 841. On September 8, 1974, TWA flight 841 crashed into the Ionian Sea en route from Athens to Rome (full scheduled route: Tel Aviv - Athens - Rome - New York). The plane was destroyed by a bomb hidden in the cargo hold, which caused structural failure resulting in uncontrollable flight. This was the first known instance of a young Arab boarding an American plane in a suicide mission.

Laurence Olivier was 71 years of age when he made this film. He was recovering from thrombosis and pneumonia. Reportedly, Olivier once said that his teenage co-star in this film, Diane Lane, was "the next Grace Kelly".

A stodgy young man gets caught up in his free-living aunt's shady schemes.
