Two trappers fight to protect their gold from outlaws.

Three cowboys are pursued by a posse because of an unfortunate case of mistaken identity.
Dir: Monte Hellman
Cast: Cameron Mitchell, Jack Nicholson, Tom Filer
C-82 mins, CC, Letterbox Format

During the making of this film, Jack Nicholson told Harry Dean Stanton that he should basically not do anything, and let the wardrobe do the acting for him. Dean Stanton has stated in interviews that this particular piece of advice really solidified his approach to acting.

11:45 AM -- SON OF A GUNFIGHTER (1966)
A young man stalks his mother's killers.
Dir: Paul Landres
Cast: Russ Tamblyn, Kieron Moore, James Philbrook
C-92 mins, CC, Letterbox Format

Russ Tamblyn appeared as 'Son of a Gunfighter' again 46 years later in Quentin Tarantino's 2012 film Django Unchained.

When the Civil War ends, Confederate spies have to return the fortune they just stole.
Dir: Michael Moore
Cast: Roy Orbison, Sammy Jackson, Maggie Pierce
C-87 mins, CC,

There had been plans for Roy Orbison to star in five movies, but after this film proved to be a critical and commercial flop no more were made.

A cowboy loner wages a bloody battle to capture a murderous bandit.
Dir: Antonio Segurini
Cast: Tony Anthony, Frank Wolff, Iolanda Modio
C-87 mins, CC, Letterbox Format

Followed by The Stranger Returns (1967) and The Silent Stranger (1968).

Dir: Luigi Vanzi (as Vance Lewis)

Cowboys discover a lost world populated by dinosaurs.
Dir: Jim O'Connolly

When this film was first conceived it was supposed to have been a follow-up to King Kong (1933), but was never made. However, an early B&W version of the "cowboys in Africa" footage was shot, and wound up being used in Mighty Joe Young (1949).

TCM PRIMETIME - WHAT'S ON TONIGHT: STAR OF THE MONTH: CHARLES BOYER

8:00 PM -- FANNY (1961)
An old waterfront character tries to help his daughter when her lover leaves her pregnant.
Dir: Joshua Logan
Cast: Leslie Caron, Maurice Chevalier, Charles Boyer
C-134 mins, CC,

Nominated for Oscars for Best Actor in a Leading Role -- Charles Boyer, Best Cinematography, Color -- Jack Cardiff, Best Film Editing -- William Reynolds, Best Music, Scoring of a Dramatic or Comedy Picture -- Morris Stoloff and Harry Sukman, and Best Picture

This production of "Fanny" began as a hit Broadway musical in 1954, with the libretto co-authored by Joshua Logan, who also directed the show, which starred Ezio Pinza, in his last stage role before his death, as Cesar, Walter Slezak as Panisse, and Florence Henderson as Fanny. When the musical was filmed, Logan stayed on as director, and the film was faithful to the show, except for the fact that Logan dropped all of the songs and simply used them as background scoring.

10:30 PM -- THE FOUR HORSEMEN OF THE APOCALYPSE (1962)
Members of an Argentinian family fight on opposite sides during World War II.
Dir: Vincente Minnelli
Cast: Glenn Ford, Ingrid Thulin, Charles Boyer
C-153 mins, CC, Letterbox Format

Despite heavy promotion by MGM, this film was a critical and financial failure, most critics comparing it unfairly with the silent classic, and Glenn Ford's Julio with that of Rudolph Valentino. Re-appraisals over the years have been rather more kind, and the film is now seen in a better light.

1:15 AM -- LOVE IS A BALL (1963)
A Riviera matchmaker tries to groom a young woman for a wealthy marriage.
Dir: David Swift
Cast: Glenn Ford, Hope Lange, Charles Boyer

BW-10 mins,

3:30 AM -- THE MADWOMAN OF CHAILLOT (1969)
An eccentric Parisian woman's optimistic perception of life begins to sound more rational than the rather traditional beliefs of others.
Dir: Bryan Forbes
Cast: Katharine Hepburn, Charles Boyer, Claude Dauphin
C-132 mins, CC,

John Huston was originally set to direct this film, but left the production some 17 days before shooting was due to begin. Bryan Forbes agreed to take over in order to have the experience of directing Katharine Hepburn, who became a close friend; he also insisted on hiring Ray Simm, a regular collaborator, as the set designer, and several last-minute alterations were made to already-built settings. Forbes also gave Michael J. Lewis his first job as a film composer.

This short film presents a behind-the-scenes look at the making of "Alfred the Great" (1969), as well as a brief history of the warrior-king.
