1. I haven't heard much from Opeth.

But since this album was produced by Steven Wilson, I feel like I should give it a try sometime. I do like the sound of this song, for sure.

2. Their earlier stuff was more death metal and they started working w/ Wilson around 20 years ago

They've gotten more progressive in recent years and I think they do all clean vocals nowadays in the studio, but still do older growling stuff live.
The band Storm Corrosion is Steven Wilson and Opeth's lead singer Mikael Akerfeldt. Opeth definitely had some influence on 21st Century Porcupine Tree.

3. That was the impression I got.

I don't care for the death metal sound, but this later stuff seems more accessible to my ears.
At some point, I'll make my way through the Storm Corrosion and Blackfield projects. Eventually.

4. I prefer Blackfield

It is closer to Wilson’s earlier solo material.
Maybe check out Sorceress by Opeth. Came out maybe10 years ago, all clean vocals and some heavy influence from Tull and Zappa.
