1. Did You Know that Gheorghe Zamfir, the World Famous King of the Pan Flute,

Went to music conservatory as a teenager with his heart dead set on learning how to play the accordion? Unfortunately, the accordion class soon closed due to lack of student enrollment, so he was shoved, kicking and screaming, into the Pan Flute class. And the rest is history, as they say... Zamfir admits as much in his autobiography, Binecuvantare si Blestem (Blessings and Curses).

2. Interesting! I hadn't heard that.

I also learned recently that the jazz pianist Dave Brubeck, who grew up on a ranch, wanted to be a large animal veterinarian when he went to college. One of his professors, who noticed him daydreaming in class as he listened to the sounds of the nearby music department, suggested maybe he should wander over there and see what they were up to. The rest is history.

The world may have lost the American James Herriott but gained a great musician in the process!
