Are there any other shows that the Allman Brothers and The Grateful Dead shared the stage together? bathroommonkey76 Feb 2012 #2
I'm pretty sure they played together least a couple of times in the 70's, but I haven't run across Old and In the Way Feb 2012 #3
Not the complete Dead, but the surviving members did an Obama benefit w/ the Allmans in 2008 sweetloukillbot Feb 2012 #6

Thought I'd see Dylan, since he'd been playing with the Dead and had a long relationship with the Band. The Band's portion of the show is out on CD. I vaguely remember working my way towards the stage when they were playing. A lot of that weekend is a bit hazy.

any video. Not sure if it was a planned or impromptu jams. Or maybe my mind is playing tricks on me. I thought the audio on this Youtube was pretty good considering the time when it was recorded.

They billed it under their individual names however, but all the surviving members of the Dead and the Allmans were there IIRC.

We drove up from the Catskills where I lived at the time.
I recall the day as being extremely hot and humid during the Dead's set, which was very long and kind of a slow tempo'd set.
Then the skies opened up to a huge downpour - many were just letting it rain on them just to cool off.
My big regret is missing most of the Band's set - by then I was pretty much done, without further comment!

As I remember it, the Allman's set was affected somewhat by the storm. Btw, I saw them in the Fillmore East Christmas week of '69. They were second of the bill: Appaloosa, Allman Brother's "Blues" Band, and Blood, Sweat, & Tears with the newly installed lead singer, David Clayton Thomas (think the second BS&T album). The Allman's just blew the doors off the old place. A few nights later we returned on New Years Eve for Jimi Hendrix's Band of Gypsies show (early show)! Of course, it was a now-legendary performance, but no one there had heard this new group or their material before. No one knew what to expect. I brought tickets that fall - a short subway ride from my high school. My big claim to R&R fame!

Back to the Glen: I remember many of the locals came and set up tables with sandwiches and soft drinks - very friendly and kind.
Afterwards by a day, we hiked in the W.G. State Park which was beautiful.
...back in the day!

I'm probably biased, but music today just doesn't have the depth or breadth of talent that was showing up on the scene in the 60's/early 70's. Seemed like every week there was some new band, breaking new ground...not a marketing derivative of the same sound that sells today. I really think these music festivals had a lot of influence on the creative talents of people who'd show up to jam with the various bands. I have this argument with my kids today about music...they, of course, think I'm nuts. Not a whole lot different, I suppose, than my discussions with my dad when he was raving about Jack Teagarden and Louis Armstrong.
