Some came and went as they inevitably destroyed themselves the way 8tracks always did.
A few others I would always replace as soon as I had the pocket change to buy another copy.
This series talks about the permanent records (hehe)
In the mid to late 70s Southern rock was a pretty popular genre all over America. I heard that the Allman Brothers were huge in NY and San Francisco for instance.
But Southern/Country Rock was the main rock genre where I came up.
We listened to all of it, not just big nationally known bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd , 38 Special or the Allmans.
My favorite Southern Rock band was on the next rung down the ladder as far as popularity went but had originality and musicianship by the truck load.
The Marshall Tucker Band.
Now the MTB 8tracks I had in my car were kind of a greatest hits records, and at least once it was the actual " Greatest Hits By The Marshall Tucker Band" the others were truck stop bargain bin "Compilations" I'd pickup for $2.98 or so on the road.
The track list varied a little bit, but the big tunes were always on them - Take the Highway, Heard it in A love Song etc.
But why highlight songs we all know already?

(2,050 posts)I kept my 8 tracks in a Rainer beer 1/2 rack box, they made them from cardboard
Somebody ripped me off and I went to cassettes after that
They did me a favor
I found a case of Memorex UD XLII 8 tracks at a garage sale years ago
They were sold for $35 each on eBay when 8 tracks in old muscle cars came back

(2,050 posts)Is what I meant
My older sister paid $500 or so for a factory 8 track radio for her 1967 Shelby GT 500 when it was being restored
My buddy still has boxes of old 8 tracks, he's an audio nut as I am but he collects audio that isn't quite hi fidelity like an old wire recorder
He owns three high end reel to reels including my old Pioneer RT-707 and my old Nakamichi Dragon, I kept my Nak CR-7A cassette and still use it
I own 4-500 blank type II cassette tapes so I won't run out

(13,196 posts)In the 80s I had a 68 T-bird that I loved with all my wallet - but we had to part ways after I got married.
In keeping with the theme here, the T-bird had an 8track player - But I never once put an 8track in it.
I bought a cassette tape adapter and kept cassettes on the car

(2,050 posts)And old cars
I kept collecting audio through my life and was doing it when it was dirt cheap after people abandoned each format
I own 800 or so vinyl records and my Nak Deck
But not one MP3 or any other digital format except about 100 cd's
My 8 track was in my 1968 Cougar XR-7 GT-390 four speed
I paid $800 for it in 1977, it's long gone

And some Skynyrd and Allman's as well ... he was a big fan of all them ... Molly Hatchet too ... who I turned him onto when I was 12. He also loved the Outlaws ...

(33,643 posts)That was as far as his technical knowledge of music playback went, actually ... don't think he ever even had a cassette desk, let alone a CD player (though he did have a DVD player we gave him, not sure he ever used it though lol).

(2,050 posts)The turntable is where it's at in my house
Nothing sounds as good as vinyl, IMHO
I just can't get into digital and even dumped my subscription to Stereophile after 25 years because that's all they talk about these days
Just an old fogy I guess
My buddy says the best 8 track home player he's heard is a Panasonic that has 4 purple track indicators over the tape well and he's looking for one
He has a bunch of nice condition tapes to play

(13,903 posts)couple of speakers strapped to the roll cage and a few 8 tracks in a cheap case under the back seat.
No one every messed with it, though that is not surprising, the jeep was as old as I was and you could practically drive nails with that 8 track player.

(2,050 posts)I just dug out WAR's greatest hits, now I won't leave the house the rest of the day
Oh well...

(3,268 posts)And by the by-before the 8 track there was a 4 track player-I know this because my brother had one in his 67' Mustang. After it was stolen he got the newer tech 8 track and admitted the thief probably did him a favor...

Problem is, Simple Man was a Skynyrd song.
Did you mean this one?
