(6,448 posts)were CSN and John McCain.
When introducing CSN, he said "this proves that patriots come in all shapes and sizes".
There was a great exchange between McCain and Stephen Stills. Stills said, "I tried my best to end the war and get you freed." McCain said, "I know you did and I appreciate that."
It was a great moment that made me laugh and gave me chills.

(9,666 posts)I always liked JA. In the last few years I've come to appreciate Jack Casady's bass playing more and more too. We saw him and Jorma a while back when they came through town. Great show. Shortly after that, I put on Crown of Creation for our bass-playing son when he stopped by. Pleasantly surprised he was.

(106 posts)Thanks GRD! Love JA. Got high with Jorma and Jack before a Tuna concert in '74. In '73 had the honor of seeing them with Papa John at an unplanned show at the Dark Horse in Boulder. Saw several versions of JA and JS over the years. Great times and great music.

(106 posts)Per Papa John edit, at the bar were only tables. We sat where Papa was playing. He would literally lean over our table with his violin while playing.
The love of my life turned me on to "Blows..." and "Sunfighter" in '72, the year I also proudly cast my first vote for George McGovern.

(5,312 posts)I'm talkin bout the Papa John thing, not the McGovern thing.
Although I of course would've voted for George too, but I was too young so I couldn't.

(15,803 posts)I have somewhat fuzzy memories of seeing them, maybe at Griffith Park in LA? Hey, it was the '60s...

(18,628 posts)I'm not sure how Cros ended up on stage with a tambourine, but there he was. I didn't know that was Nicky Hopkins on the keys. I don't think he was ever in the band either.
Thanx for posting. K&R

(5,312 posts)...Nicky played live/recorded with JA, as per this example.

(24,484 posts)He played with a lot of SF bands in the 70's. Included Quicksilver Messenger Service, NRPS, JGB. Also played with the Who, and the Stones.
I used to read all of the liner notes on my LP's. He seemed to be on all of my records.

(106 posts)Another thing about the Papa John Tuna concert was that security at the bar wouldn't let the band in, having no idea who they were. We were in the front of the line and shouted out, "They're the band" and eventually they were let in.
I saw JA in one of their later incarnations with all kinds of guest musicians, including Papa John. Unfortunately, Grace must have been high on some serious stuff, because she stunk that night.
Sometime in the late 90's or so I saw that JS were playing at a bar. I went by myself and there were less than twenty people there. Paul Kantner was the only original member, but they played quite excellently. There was a drunk woman who kept requesting "Ride the Tiger", and she even went on stage to talk with Paul, who told her and the audience he wasn't going to play anything newer than 1971. I loved it, but there were some "We Built this City..." lovers who were very disappointed that night.
The day I got high with Jorma and Jack has a story behind it, but I'll save for another time. I just emailed the JA link above to the woman who got us all together for that moment. Also that day met John Sebastien who introduced and played "Welcome Back Kotter" some time before it was on the air.
