They were pretty normal dudes. Given their unique approach to music, I perhaps expected more "tortured artist" attitude. (Yeah, Billy C I'm talking to you).
But, I was wrong!

(11,802 posts)Glad to hear it. The tortured artist shtick gets old really fast!

(65,068 posts)And, it wasn't that fast!!!

(11,802 posts)For the record, you speakin to a more David Lee Roth personality (or ego truth be told), than the tortured artist.

(65,068 posts)I'm a showy piano player & a showy guitar player!
And, a very affected singer.
Otherwise, it wouldn't be as fun.

(65,068 posts)I started playing piano at 4. Standard method.
Just before I turned 11, I heard Monk & Tuner the first time. Guy at the piano store heard me play and told my dad I didn't need a teacher but a coach. So, from around 11 to 19 I was a jazz piano player.
At 19, when I graduated from college (1976), I bought a guitar. I wanted an instrument I could carry, and with 9 years of learning harmony, improve, chord construction & the like, I didn't want an instrument I couldn't play chords on. So, I didn't choose guitar, it chose me.
I taught myself from listening to Clapton, Trower, Blackmore, Iommi, et all.
Then the Cars can along and figured out to blend guitar tricks.
Since I was mostly multi-keyboards and strictly second guitar, I plateaued.
But, in 1988 I got hooked on Satriani & got really serious again.
Now, I'd say the famous guitar player I'm closest to is John Petrucci.
I'm very fast, and combine runs with all notes picked and legato.
I play a lot in locrian & dorian modes when I'm not just doing typical pentatonic box.
I do the pick squeals and whammy stuff, so there's some noise added to my playing.
As a keyboardist now, I can sum it up easily. There is no such thing as a three tone chord!
