Sam Cooke's A Change Is Gonna Come!

Funny thing. As a big fan of early Rod Stewart, he's all over this tune. His tone, his phrasing. He owes a lot to Sam. Like, his career. No Sam Cooke, no Rod Stewart. Similar to Joe Cocjer/Ray Charles or David Lee Roth/Louis Prima. But that's the beauty if music. This generation influences the next and they run with it. Sorry for the diatribe, as a singer I'm fascinated by the audible influence of one Singer to another....

Anyway, the late, great Sam Cooke performing one if the vest songs ever recorded, in my less than humble opinion......

It is, IMHO the best version. I'm a big Al Green fan and yet I think Sam Cooke's version is the better version.

Play it a lot followed by Etta James, "I'd Rather Go Blind" and Nina Simone, 'I've Put A Spell On You"

Etta James' I'd rather go blind knocks me right on my ass! Just sooooo good!

I do dig this version though. It's like 7/8's as good as far as I'm concerned....

Spent an entire summer listening to nothing but him, but this one, just for me, I'll give the edge to Sam.

I gotta go with Me in this.

1) Sam
2) Otis
3) Al

Don't think for a minute I don't love Al! Big influence on me. (Unfortunately, I'm white so it's hard to hear. LOL. Lotta competition from Zeppelin etc. But it's there! When I played at BB Kings on Times Square I kept thinking, Al Green stood right here man! Your on a, stage where Al Green performed! But Otis' version is better! And it's my thread so....

I remember listening to Randi Rhodes the day after Obama was elected. Was doing cable tv installation at the time. I pulled up to a job as the show started and she played bits of his speech with Sam's version in the background. I wept. Seriously, I wept thinking, "we're beyond this ugliness. This plague. This sickness that is racism. We as a country have moved past this bullshit." Naivety strike me down right?

Shit, just wiped away a tear thinking about it.
