51 years ago this month, December 21, 1970.

President Nixon inspects Elvis Presley’s cufflinks during Presley’s famous Oval Office visit.

The man at right is special assistant Egil “Bud” Krogh, who would later serve 4 1/2 months in prison for his role in the Watergate scandal

5. Elvis had an obsession with collecting law enforcement badges

He went to the White House with the intent of obtaining a DEA badge, which he received. Elvis fed Nixon a bunch of crap about how he was "anti drugs" and "anti-Communist" and Nixon obliged his rant with giving him the badge. Apparently, on some level, Elvis believed having the badge would allow him to travel anywhere he wanted with his guns and narcotics. He was clearly suffering from side effects of his prescription drug habit at this point.

Elvis and Nixon looks a lot more like a stunt today than maybe it did at the time.

Elvis does not quite look all there as Nixon examines his cufflinks, Oval Office, today 1970. (Bud Krogh, at right, later authorized office burglary of Daniel Ellsberg’s psychiatrist.)
