Saw a documentary on Woodstock- the promoters had no real idea who Cocker was. The actually thought he was a black guy. When he got on stage there was an immediate discussion about pulling the plug one him - some thought he was having a fit, some thought he was being made fun of, some thought it wasn't who they booked. He made it into the movie and his career took off. Yes he was known but not to the extent the movie allowed.

Btw - the couple on the cover of the movie in the blanket are still married.
