(10,173 posts)4. depends I think. On the surface, the lyrics come across like the usual contemplative 90's fare
... Not being dismissive saying that because the lyrics are strong. With every listening, they mean something different to me.
Musically it's a journey. It's evocative, meditative, memorable. At the start, it's a nice melody followed by an amazing guitar jam. There's a lovely atmospheric section before the climax at the end. I think diamond sea encapsulates the best of Sonic Youth, especially their musicianship.

I think too many people hear the dissonance on some tunes and just assume they can't play - Like Patty Smith with a clarinet - but Sonic Youth had serious chops
