One of the benefits of being on the Dead Heads mailing list in the '70s was that they sent you lots of free stuff. The Rum Runners single came with two post cards of the album cover art. They sent double post cards for Tiger Rose, Mars Hotel, Compliments, Blues for Allah (plus a sticker with the cover art) and more. They also sent promo singles of The Music Never Stopped, some song from Compliments and others that I can't recall. I've kept everything they mailed to me. The newletters had psychedelic artwork, comics, crazy rambling raps and quotes from Saint Dilbert . One of the newletters has a page with a pointillist pen-and-ink portrait of the band, suitable for framing. They were so much fun to read and I looked forward to them. I felt a real connection to the band through the newsletters until they stopped coming, around 1980.
Indeed, Hunter sure could turn a phrase:
After all the trial and fury
They spared the judge and hanged the jury
No one asked the reason why
Sentence passed they turned to die
Turning down, down, down
Till their dreams are touching ground
Rising up like gentle rain
They turn to rise and fall again
Their dreams tattered sails in the wind
