Cyndi Lauper Reveals Five-Year Struggle With Psoriasis

I lost touch with Cyndi Lauper after my taste in MTV moved toward their Headbanger's Ball, but I always referred to her as my "anti-Madonna." Cyndi's visual "sizzle" was always accompanied by artistic "steak" -- she was nobody's "boy toy." Well, in observance of Psoriasis Awareness Month, Cyndi has revealed that she's been dealing with the autoimmune condition (your skin cells grow out of control at any given moment) since 2010. I received a video of Cyndi talking about her psoriasis for my New Jersey health news blog.

With her fashion history, it's just plain startling to see her cloaked up like a nun. As she speaks of trying to conceal her breakouts and trying treatments from shampoo to rubber suits, I couldn't help thinking that maybe this is the worst disease she could have gotten -- it seems so totally against her extroverted image. I also found myself remembering the iconic photos where she flashes legs that she says are now scarred, and the video where she bared a back that she says she once hurriedly had to coat with makeup.

The good news is, Cyndi looks only half her 62 years of age. And the great news is, she's not looking for sympathy, but for help in fighting back: she's joined the National Psoriasis Foundation public awareness and patient community initiatives.
