Earl Scruggs

A great one has passed on at age 88. I can't think of a more influential musician. His style essentially defined the bluegrass genre in the '40's when he joined Bill Monroe's band, changing them from a 'stringband' into something else. Since they were called the Bluegrass Boys, the genre was defined. Earl has been on the cutting edge ever since.

The 5 string banjo may be dissed (and dismissed) as a hillbilly instrument, but that is a limited
and very passé point of view, as anyone who knows the name Béla Fleck knows.

Earl was a visionary, a pioneer, and, not incidentally, one of the finest pickers to ever play that instrument.
