Related: About this forumComment Thread for May Photography Competition!
Whoot whoot. This thread is for questions, comments and idle picci chatter about the May Photography Contest.
It is that time of the month again. The submission thread for the competition is here:
https://www.democraticunderground.com/1036100831
Please pop along and make sure you submit a picci. Grumps theme is "I pulled over for this shot." which is great! Also please cast the DU net far and wide and prompt others who you know would be interested in getting involved but who may for whatever reason missed the launch, or are hesitant to get involved.

(149,620 posts)Andy and I were driving out to visit a new supermarket that was some distance away, when we suddenly saw this strip of roadside flowers!
He pulled over at once, and we got out to get some photos. We'd been looking everywhere for the Texas state flower, and though we'd seen many, they could not be gotten at, due to difficult locations.
This road-side spot did it! As soon as we saw it, he parked his truck and the rest is history!

(9,685 posts)I'm in too. I took the picture when I went to visit the twin for my bday. We pulled onto the slip and I just had to get out of the car to take some pictures - it was so lovely on the Lough - but very windy!

(31,388 posts)Based in Bordeaux, my husband and I toured the surrounding regions on two different days with a guide. She booked us into several wineries for tours and tastings. We literally pulled over to the side of the road so I could take photos of the Chateau, as it was not one of the wineries we visited. April 20, 2017. I've been thinking about that trip, as it was five years ago last month.

(5,420 posts)"Glory on Gloria Avenue" by Mira is my favorite photo. Enchanting. Endearing. Like a small hideaway, an oasis from the hustle and bustle. Peaceful amidst the semi-chaos.
however;
Walleye's "Winter Solstice Sunset, Philadelphia Pike, Wilmington, Delaware" is the perfect picture for the theme, "I pulled over for this shot." Because you did just that, Walleye! I hope no one gave you any road rage when you literally pulled over in traffic. And what a sight you saw with the sun setting. Did you and your new 400 mm dash out to the middle of the road for that amazing composition?
Whew!!

(22,380 posts)I am (or used to be) oblivious to potential trouble if a good shot called me to pay attention. Almost got hit on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, and was held by a jabbering native to not fall out of the train photographing Machu Picchu from below and the Urubamba river as we crossed it.
I've been fortunate to travel extensively in my life and always the camera was most important and hanging on my neck.
The photo I entered, though, is down on the street where I happily live and I stopped to take a photo of the most beautiful azalea I get to admire every spring.

(31,022 posts)Ive been grazed by midget race cars, knocked over by NFL player, nearly crushed in a crowd, had my leg torn apart by dogs. Oh yes, those were the good times I love your azaleas, were seeing a lot of azaleas here. Now that Im retired sometimes I take a deep breath remembering all the chances I took when I was working for the newspaper. Fellow survivor of photography

(16,397 posts)It's fun to see all the things people have spotted and snapped along roadsides. Nice variety, too. Quirky structures, luscious landscapes, living things from hawks to bison to bluebonnets, and so much more.
