I figured out (almost) everything. Nothing is really "secret" but there are many options.

There are some "cheat sheets" with recommended settings, and these helped me.

https://photographylife.com/recommended-nikon-z5-settings

https://photographyfuse.com/recommended-nikon-z5-settings/

https://www.wimarys.com/nikon-z5-manual/

And for an "I did the right thing" review, the incomparable Ken Rockwell.
https://kenrockwell.com/nikon/mirrorless/z5.htm
Ken makes a living with referral sales, so "rarely is heard, a discouraging word" but his reviews are thorough. Ken must set color saturation to +100.

FWIW, I stick with Aperture Priority.
The key settings are obvious: ISO, VR,
The *only* customization I have done is the "i" menu.
Because just about everything can be set from there, which is damn handy.

Big deal: you slip into manual focus by rotating the extra ring on your lens. No switching needed. In manual focus mode the magnifying glass buttons zoom you in for more precise focus, but until your fingers automatically find them, this upsets framing. (tripod helps)

Focus Peaking is in the "wrench" menu.

Reason it's priced right, it's slow on video. I don't do video.

OK ONE MAGIC TRICK.
When you are shooting, pressing the OK button lets you move the focus spot with the joystick button. I couldn't figure out what that did. Until I did.

And one strange but nice thing.
There is no "macro" button (usually a flower in the focus mode menu).
Apparently, Z lenses know what you are up to (from the focus distance?) and go into macro mode. Especially that 105 macro.

ONLY gripe! I have fat fingers and yanking the SD card is a chore. Can you imagine that? I don't use wi-fi transfer, but might just do so. The manuals are downloadable from nikonusa site, as is their software. Since I only recently got a fast internet connection, my operating systems are older and don't support their software.

I have been using Preview on the mac and GIMP (open source image editor, https://gimp.org ) for more advanced edits. I am trying darktable (https://www.darktable.org ) for RAW editing lately. As Ken Rockwell says, the default jpeg creation in the camera is excellent, "customer ready". And the camera does various corrections internally when you choose jpeg.

If your computer is halfway up to date, the Nikon software will load and run. Not having done so, no comment.

Advanced: The FTZ adapter works flawlessly with 50 year old lenses. The DSLR's would not accommodate non-AI lenses. Serious trouble with DSLR's. Gone. Old lenses work in manual focus, "Stop down" mode. Focus wide open and stop the lens down. The meter accommodates.

P.S. the DISPLAY button has NOTHING to do with the control that's "behind" it. I shot a few single-frame videos before figuring out that said control got into the wrong position. Set it and

AND the options available in the MENU change with what shooting mode you are in. Some are grayed out or not.

The "pencil" menu is complex. I think they hide complexity there. I just remember that d9 is focus peaking. THAT menu will take time with the manual and cruising, but get the basics first. Just want to say that there's a lot under that rock.

all suggestions and hints noted and very much appreciated...

I was getting dizzy looking at all camera reviews and just went for it... not interested in video and I'm feeling like this will be a good fit for me...

can't wait to share when I figure it all out

I got a D800. It has around 20 settings. I know how to use four of them - one of which is the shutter.

I did computer support for more years than I care to remember. It was my "job" to read the manuals and find those 4 for users.

Since I walked through everything (and more!) I think I use only these
• Focus area (wide/narrow)
• Metering mode (wide/narrow)
• +/- exposure
• Aperture setting (in Aperture priority mode)
• If it exists, focus mode (auto/infinity/macro/manual) On coolpix, not Z series.
The control ring drops me into manual focus when I turn it.

AND DID I LEAVE THE DAMN SD CARD IN THE COMPUTER???

company that built and sold computers.

She gets a call from a customer, "The computer don't work. I tried x, y, q and z and it still doesn't work."

Daughter: "Well, try M q (again) p, r and so forth."

Customer: "It still doesn't work."

Daughter, calls owner and reviews the sequence.

Owner: "Well, first thing to do, hit the "off switch. Wait two minutes. Then unplug it. Now, put it in a box and send it back to us. You're obviously too stupid to own a computer."

Out of business, two years later.

My cousin owned a business and I used to hang out there a lot. I was a teacher and would see him after school or work for him during breaks and summers.

He was/still is an alcoholic. It was an auto glass, upholstery place. As time went on, his alcoholism and business deteriorated in step with each other. It got to the point that he would have only one or two jobs in the morning and his work day would end at 1 or 2 pm, depending on the difficulty of the jobs. Then he would break out the bottle and customer interaction would degenerate into a shit show.

He retired last year but he made so much money in the earlier days of the business that he retired a millionaire. At his first week of business, January, 1972, there was a major snow storm. Major car glass breakage in the area due to tree branches. He made $6k his first week. I remember, 6k in '72 was my full year's teaching salary.

Lot's of satisfying times ahead for you.
My advice (as someone that has a B.S. in Photography): Don't get too bogged down in the technical stuff. Seeing is the most important part. And have fun.

“The photographer’s most important and likewise most difficult task is not learning to manage his camera, or to develop, or to print. It is learning to see photographically – that is, learning to see his subject matter in terms of the capacities of his tools and processes, so that he can instantaneously translate the elements and values in a scene before him into the photograph he wants to make.”

it's hard to figure the really basic starting point that you will use 80% or more of the time.

I relied on cheat sheets since I skipped the DSLR generation entirely!

That's why I offered my defaults.

Some things were new to me entirely.

Yes, the "right brain" part of seeing is the essence. Right place right time. Oooh! Found it. Even a webcam shot.
