Point Fermin Falcons

Last edited Tue Feb 14, 2023, 03:27 AM - Edit history (2)

Point Fermin in the San Pedro neighborhood of Los Angeles is one of the premier sites in the country for viewing peregrine falcons. Unfortunately, I don't think it's very safe. The falcons nest and raise their young near the top of a three hundred foot cliff. Many of the bird watchers and photographers ignore the posted signs and climb over the wall meant to keep people away from the edge. The cliffs of San Pedro and nearby Palos Verdes are notoriously unstable, and people fall to their deaths every year, (four people died in 2022).

I love shooting there, but I refuse to climb over the wall. I don't always get the best shots as a result, but it's a matter of principle for me. Nonetheless, I did manage to get photos of the male peregrine perching on a limb near the top of the cliff at Golden Hour.

Locals have named this bird "Tuzee." See if you can spot the reason why.

For the tech freaks, I shot this with a crop sensor Canon R10 mirrorless with a Sigma 150-600mm lens. I used this combination for the extra reach of the crop sensor, and also because it's a relatively inexpensive setup. It's not the safest neighborhood, and there have been thefts and robberies there.

Thanks to all who have given me hearts.

The textures in all those feathers! It's so "3-D!"

In the fourth photo, right - uh - foot (banded with "02 Z&quot : I see one "toe" with two black "toenail" claws. But when I was typing this message, it occurred to me that "Tuzee" probably refers to the band inscription on that leg!

He was named for his leg band.

The funny thing is, I have a good friend and former coworker named Tuzee. It's quite a coincidence.

This is a beautiful bird, and you got some really nice shots of him.

I was stuck on where his name came from till I scrolled down to the next to the last photo. If one else is stuck, that's the one to look at.
