(90,763 posts)I agree. B&W sets it off just right.

(17,086 posts)The first two, particularly. Where were those? I worked at Steamtown in Scranton, PA (before it was Steamtown) a little bit. I need to get over to Durango and take the Silverton RR soon.

(18,628 posts)As a person who finds wonder in anything mechanical, I find few subjects that can pose for a photograph as boldly and self confidently as a locomotive. I have one friend who does nothing but. He's been chased and arrested by the railroad bulls and chastised by steel mill guards, but never misses an opportunity to grab his camera when something unusual chugs it's way through Sharon PA or Youngstown.
Since these appear to be at a really RR cool museum, I imagine you used up some memory space there.
These are beautiful, and you're probably right that b&w is the format that takes the viewer back in time for these steaming behemoths.
As an aside, I rode the Broadway Special from Y'Town to Manhattan on New Years Eve some years ago, and my friend rode with me as far as Altoona. Along the way he discussed the history of the route that wends it's way around Horseshoe Curve, explaining that all that jet black roadbed along the tracks is coal, gradually deposited from 100 years of those steam locomotives traveling the same route we were on. I thought it was built that way.
