I have played around with this technique .... put your camera on the tripod, set the shutter to bulb and paint away. Trial and error will tell you what f/stop and how long you need to paint.

1. I've played with this but have nothing as nice as this work

Thanks for sharing this. Being a night owl it gives me a reason to head out and try to get better results. I did notice that they cooked the dynamic range a bit.

2. I "paint" with light on occasion.

That's how I got the face of this scale to come out so well (and the Toledo on the ground). It's useful and fun but can also quickly ruin a photo if done incorrectly. I've ruined more than I've had successes with. I want to try these long exposures though one of these days.
