The one that got away...

Sitting at my desk earlier this afternoon and looked out the window to see a hawk had landed on the deck railing! Ack! I always keep my little Canon point and shoot on my desk--but it wasn't there--because I had taken it outside with me this morning hoping the fox would have spent the night trying to stay dry under our front deck during the thunderstorms we had all last night. Eh, no fox this morning, so I put the camera down on the dining table and forgot to bring it back to my desk.

So I had to grab my other camera from the closet in my study, get it out of the bag, focus and try not to spook the hawk with too much movement. Didn't work. So, here's the one and only shot I got--of the hawk flying away.

We've lived in this house 5 1/2 years. I've never seen a hawk land on the deck railing. Never.

To put his size in perspective, here's a shot of the next hummer which stopped by for some juice after the hawk flew away.

1. Last week a peregrine landed on the 27th floor of my building where there's a 'porch.'

He sat on the railing and someone went and got his phone/camera to shoot and just as he focused, the falcon turned to give us a nice profile. There are lots of them nesting around Midtown Atlanta, living among the highrises. They are amazing to watch sailing among the buildings.

2. We see hawks--and hear owls--quite regularly around here. Lots of turkey buzzards, too. I see them

sailing on the wind, looking for prey.

It really surprised me, though, to see this hawk perched there out in the open. The ones I've been able to shoot from my study--through a window--have all been in
trees.
