Street Photos Taken Over Half A Century Ago (90 Pics)

Grandson Inherits His Grandfather’s Collection Of Unseen 'Street Photos' Taken Over Half A Century Ago (90 Pics)

When in 2014, Dylan Scalet inherited a sizable collection of photos captured by his grandfather Jack Sharp, he didn’t expect much. It actually took him 6 years—and COVID-19 lockdown happening—to finally begin to digitize the film. What he discovered was a treasure trove of incredible photographs depicting street life in Europe more than half a century ago.

I was in college half a century ago; I have boxes and boxes of photos as old as these and older. The only difference is that these are good photos and mine aren't. But half a century ago isn't as long ago as one might think; some of us who were taking photos in those distant days are still alive and kicking.

I, too, have boxes and boxes of these “antique”. “historical artifacts”

Many with me in them!

50 years ago was 1970... and I was in high school.

These are from either the 1930s or 1940s looking at the clothing style and the cars.

So closer to 80 to 90 years old.

That is just what I see from the women's styles and the cars.

It is a great collection, though. Take some time to look at it.

Let me first say that his Grandfather had a good eye! A lot of this rivals, if not surpasses, Henri Cartier Bresson. I suspect that if Grand Dad had as good a publicist as HCB we'd all know his name.

This appears to be a '53 or thereabouts MG.

The bikini came out in 1946 and this appears to be from the '50s.

The Asahi Pentax came out in 1957.

One comment said the tree was a "creepy tree". I can't remember the name of the tree, and we do have them here in the states, and of course they are all over Europe. I'm told that they flower and look spectacular. Maybe in some future time or life I'll be able to visit again and see them in bloom.

I was in Europe May 2019 and took these photo. I think it's the same type of tree.

What are those creepytrees, anyway? I never saw them before.
