They are most likely from the Santa Ana winds, which do send the smog out to the beach.

hope they're not caused by pollution, but they've been dramatic as hell...

Those winds come normally from the NE towards the W/SW and they're making our sunsets pretty too.
If you've got any photos, it would be great to see them.
