Barred Owl

Near my house is a barred owl nesting in a tree. the tree the nest was originally in had to be removed due to storm damage so a neighbor put a milk crate in a tree and placed the nest there. Mama doesnt mind and is raising an owlet there.

couldnt get any good owlet pictures,he/she is obscured by the crate but you can tell its there. when you approach the area mama flies out from the tree canopy to keep an eye on things.

As a non-native, the Barred Owl has invaded territory previously dominated by the Northern Spotted Owl and Marbled Murralette. Decades of work to improve and protect habitat for the natives has been much less effective with the migration of this eastern species.

Western migration of Europeans with their agricultural practices may have contributed to their expanded range.

Wildlife officials have launched an aggressive effort to reduce Barred Owl populations.

Spotted Owl population.

Pretty bird -- very similar to though larger than Northern Spotted Owl.

“Who cooks for you?” “Who cooks for you?”

I have a pair in the woods behind my house. I hear them late at night.

They are trying to protect their young and leading danger away is fundamental to them. At least this is what I was told...please correct if I am mistaken.

Fed it raw hamburger, and took it out in the back yard to give it "flying lessons". He'd ride around on my shoulder for hours every day.

Finally got to where he could fly, but he'd always come back to me.

Then one day, he flew off and did not come back. I never saw him again. Always think about him and hope he did alright.
