The Newsroom 8/5 (spoiler)

I won't give away too many spoilers but tonight's episode was "5/1" which should tell you what the episode is about.

I just love this show. It's so smart and witty and inspirational.

Will's 'state of mind' during the entire episode was hilarious.

I'm man enough to tell you that this episode brought a few tears to my eye.

Sorkin is a genius and this is becoming one of my favorite tv series of all time.

This episode is a must-see!

1. It was an amazing episode.

It was the first time I let myself feel any emotion about the event on 5/1.

5. I could never understand most people's reaction to this piece of news

How can people be so relieved and emotional because Bin Laden was killed? In my mind it stopped being about him a long time ago. In my mind he just turned into this ghost that showed up with internet tapes.

Two awful wars, the patriot act, drone attacks, gitmo, re-election of bush, i mean the US basically turned into its own worst enemy, a high-tech police state. And it still is. So how can the killing of one individual give any kind of closure? I just felt like people lost sight of all the shit that's happened. Was it really worth it?


Also i think it's symptomatic that the president did not even acknowledge the London and Madrid bombings in that speech, which were inspired by Bin Laden and Al Qaida. If anything it would have been an acknowledgement of the fact that other allies have also suffered and would have established Obama as a truly global leader.

6. For me personally it was emotional because

watching the events of 9/11 unfold live on TV and then the months of coverage afterwards was very traumatic. I wanted whoever was responsible brought to justice and when bin Laden was killed there was finally relief even though it had to be with his death.

Yes, the Bush disaster of Iraq and the erosion of our civil liberties was horrible - but that's a separate issue. None of that was really necessary to get bin Laden. For me it would have been even worse if we had to go through all of that and never got the mastermind of 9/11.

7. Series Finale

I'll admit to giving up on the show after the first few episodes. So I just got around to watching the last couple of seasons on dvd. Aaron Sorkin's dvd commentary on the series finale kind of tied everything together.

Big thumbs up to the way the series evolved.
