(2,749 posts)This is getting so dark and bizarre. Anybody else drinking right now?

(18,641 posts)It is truly a very well written, inscrutable story.

(24,721 posts)It prompted me to watch this program for the first time; I was floored by how well-done it is. For me, it's this generation's version of Miami Vice (except for the drug theme).
I'll be interested in reading the opinions of tonight's episode.

(14,255 posts)True Detective will be re-run many times, starting with oh, an hour after the broadcast.
But couldn't help myself, had to watch.
No spoilers, but I had to almost leave the room a couple of times, it was that tense for me.
Looking forward to other opinions as well. I was happy with it, and wonder how the next season will be woven in, if woven in at all.

(28,254 posts)The ending was so good that neither Slate.com nor Salon.com could run their standard morning-after "The Ending Of The Series Absolutely SUCKED For The Following Obscure Reasons" articles. Slate and Salon raved about the ending, instead.

(28,254 posts)Both Slate and Salon are now weighing in with critiques of the show. Which is OK, everybody is entitled to an opinion, even those who are paid to put those opinions in writing. I thought it was an amazing show, with a stunningly well done finale. Highest recommendation.

(29,704 posts)was incredible. The dialogue was important, real and probably undecipherable for many people.

(2,749 posts)Like I said, I didn't know what to expect at all, but it was tense for me, as I had predicted that one or both would die and that looked like it was going to happen. Anyway, if a gross of Emmys don't go to this show next time around then the thing must be fixed because this was a really GREAT show, limited as it was. It was like watching an 8 hour movie one hour at a time. It was pure torture, especially after episode four. I thought I would lose my mind, having to wait an entire week to find out what happens next. There is such shit on t.v. that this series was like finding a flawless diamond in a cow patty, a very wonderful and unexpected surprise. I will miss these characters. But I guess you can't expect an Oscar winning actor to bag his movie career and do more excellent television programs. We can keep hope alive though. I know I will.

(22,340 posts)Acts I and II were fantastic. I have no idea Pizzolatto decided to completely change the tone and narrative structure for the last act.
There were way too many loose ends left flapping in the wind for my liking in a work that, again for the first two acts, was so tightly written. Why go through so much work to establish a wide conspiracy and then just not come back to it in the denouement?
And the last scene about made me want to puke. There is no way he makes that conversion. I'm not denying the emotions, but he would know that that was all the result of brain chemistry as the body dies.
All that said, still wonderful television.

(20,805 posts)...interestingly in three separate parts...the opening 4 episodes were amazing...well written and well acted...very tight, well-paced...the next two started to meander a little...not quite as tight...and the final two were the most 'disappointing' of all of them...and by 'disappointing' I only mean as compared to the rest of the series...this entire series, is light years ahead of anything else on tv at the moment...
Fabulous acting, really good directing, a great mixture of world-weary, flawed-personalities thrown into the pressure cooker of a corrupt and lackadaisical police force, coupled with a (series) of hideous crimes, with some religious/political corruption thrown in for good measure...
I really enjoyed it...both McConaughey and Harrelson deserve awards for their performances...the director as well...

(2,351 posts)Both actors are two of my favorites. I just got so darn lost watching parts of it, I gave up until I could 'have at it' in one sitting.
Is it worth watching all at once from the beginning all the way through? It was so confusing to me, bouncing between the time periods.
Guess me getting older doesn't help.
truebrit71
(20,805 posts)...that way it was a little less-confusing when they went back and forth...
I had to re-watch certain scenes to make sure I fully heard the dialogue...but sometimes it was just because I enjoyed it so much...

(2,351 posts)thanks for your note. It sounds like a plan to watch it that way.

(11,833 posts)It's so well-written. Incredibly compelling & entertaining. So, I'm not reading the rest of this thread, as I don't want any spoilers. But after I watch the rest of season 1, I'll check in here. Agree with the OMG just on the basis of the first four episodes. Amazing series. And I read that they are ordering a season two, with all new actors and an all new plot line. Hooray!

(22,340 posts)I was a little disappointed in Act 3. Better than 95% of television for sure, but did not live up to what they started in Acts 1 and 2.

(11,833 posts)I gotta say so far it's freakin' me out. In a good way. Great writing. Great cinematography. Great acting, especially imo Mathew Mcaughnahey (or however the heck one spells his name, lol).

(20 posts)Maybe I've been living under a rock, but I haven't heard much about Season 2. I did read earlier this year that McConaughey and Harrelson wouldn't be the detectives again and new people would come in and it would be a whole new thing.
But what is going on?! When is it starting? Does anyone know any confirmed details?

(4,544 posts)But anyone following the Harrelson/McConaughey duo is going to be at a disadvantage. Talk about a touch act to follow! whew...

(16,104 posts)If you'd a told me McConaughey and Harrelson were going to play those two Season 1 characters, and put in such outstanding performances, I wouldn't have believed it.
Farrell and Vaughn are intriguing choices, and if the story and direction and cinematography hold up from Season 1, these guys could be just as exceptional. They are seasoned big-time actors.
