Pima County votes 3-2 to continue funding water stations along border
TUCSON – The narrow 3-2 vote renews the contract until June of 2020 and will cost $30,000.
“I think this is another wonderful example of the kind hearts of Pima County that were able to save lives every year,” Joel Smith said. “The number of migrant deaths that we find in the desert each year is staggering.”
Ally Miller Pima County Supervisor for District 1 against extending the contract.
“The reason I voted no was because I believe that if we put water out in the desert, it entices people to cross number one illegally into the country,” Miller said. “To come across a very dangerous border and take risks that they probably wouldn’t take if they didn’t think there was water there.”
For Pima County Chairman Richard Elias, he said it is the smart thing to do.
“Humane Borders has really saved a lot of lives over the years that it’s been in existence and its a very unfortunate situation where Congress has not acted to fix our immigration laws,” Elias said.” People get caught in a very bad situation.”
