Newly-elected U.S. Rep. Ron Barber will host his first “Congress on the Corner”
event this weekend at a Tucson Safeway — but not the same store where he
was nearly killed during a similar event in January 2011.

<snip>

Barber’s first “Congress on the Corner” event will be at the Safeway at the
southeast corner of East Grant and North Craycroft roads. It runs Saturday from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Visitors can come and meet one-on-one with Barber to discuss any issue,
concern or problem regarding the federal government.

Barber plans to hold many similar events across the district.

“I will not become isolated in Washington,” Barber said in a news release.
“My work at the Capitol will be influenced by what I hear and learn here in Arizona.”

Ron Barber, southern Arizona's newly elected congressman, made his first moves in office this week.

His first vote, a few hours after being sworn into the U.S. House of Representatives, broke with other Democrats on a border security bill. And on Saturday he will hold his first "Congress on Your Corner" event at a Tucson Safeway.

Both moves are symbolic of continuing the tradition of Barber's predecessor, former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who fashioned herself a "Blue Dog Democrat" tough on border security and who held numerous local constituent events.

Barber's office says his meeting Saturday with voters at a Safeway grocery
store will be held at 1 p.m. It previously was scheduled for earlier Saturday,
but was postponed by several hours because weather delayed Barber's travels from Washington.
