Homeless worried over new Modesto ordinance

Some homeless people responded with defiance to Modesto's recently approved anti-camping ordinance.

Others said it will be another hassle of enduring life on the streets.

"I am just going to pray to figure out what to do," said Gary Nicholas, a Bible-reading man who has stayed in makeshift campsites near Dry Creek when he couldn't get a bed at a shelter. "People will be dealing with more tickets, more court cases."

For years, Modesto police have enforced rules against camping in parks and conducted sweeps of homeless campsites. But an ordinance approved by the City Council last week will make unauthorized camping on public and private property a misdemeanor violation.

A sad story that continues to grow around this state and country. Got to love those priceless un-compassionate comments to this story. It's gone, this country is feeding on it's own consuming the downtrodden and discarding any unfortunate soul caught in this economic disaster. The community leaders are only to happy to help comply with their rich benefactors, to ensure they keep their job/ position and income/revenue, and the NIMBY's and kick the can down the road type of posters support this.

No solutions with the current leadership, they can only continue to kow-tow to property developers and other self-serving business interests to ensure their rights to continued revenues and income, at others expense.

They HAVE no revenue. All this will do will keep the jails full and/or kick these people to another town that will do the same thing.

I can't read the comments. They make me physically ill.

That's the thing I don't understand about the broader picture, whether it's the homeless getting tickets they surely can't pay, or unemployed college graduates who can't pay their student loans, or sick people who cant afford the medical bills. The system just demands payment without regard for where that payment could possibly come from. We can't all borrow money from our parents.

I've had personal friendships of many years fall apart debating this exact issue. Why do so many people just not see the truth about this situation? Are they living in a bubble?

Part of OWS was to address these issues, due to foreclosures and other BANKSTER issues.

However, on the other side of the aisle(you know who), those people are the ones that refuse to see the realty of the current state of California's economy which has adversely affected alot of people. (Count ME in)

These are people that are NOT concerned with the plight of the homeless. They're only trying to save their own selfs, and what they have, they're typical NIMBY's and Kick the Can Down the Road (KCDR) types.

Those people with their NIMBY and KCDR attitudes are themselves just a paycheck or two from joining some of those homeless people.

When/If their bubble pops, will they be finding out about those same laws that they have enacted against the homeless? Will those ordinances/laws come back upon them in the future and then they find themselves now homeless. What will they say then?

There's a name for that and it starts with "S" and it's a german word, we all know it here at DU.
