California legislator opens wider lead in US House race

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A state legislator backed by the Democratic establishment and supporters of Bernie Sanders widened his lead in a runoff election Tuesday to fill a vacant U.S. House seat in Southern California, returns showed.

Assemblyman Jimmy Gomez grabbed a 14-point lead over attorney and fellow Democrat Robert Lee Ahn, who was trying to become the first Korean-American in Congress in nearly two decades, according to a tally of mail-in ballots with a sprinkle of precinct votes.

Gomez had 57 percent, with Ahn at 43 percent, with about 24,000 votes counted.

Gomez has gradually opened a larger margin after the first returns showed the race between the two Democrats nearly even.
