Californians life expectancy at birth is second highest in the nation, right behind Hawaii, according to a new study published Tuesday that examined health disparities across all states from 1990 to 2016.
By the numbers, life expectancy in California is around 80.9 years while its 81.3 years in Hawaii, according to the study. (The study didnt look at which states have better beaches or weather but we kind of know the answer to that.)
Published in the JAMA journal, this study on the state of U.S. health looked at 333 causes of death and 84 health risk factors among all the states and Washington, D.C., and it found how long people should expect to live based on where they live.
Causes of death ranged from things like diseases or gun violence, and health risks ranged from tobacco use to alcohol use. Here are the top five states with the highest life expectancy at birth:
Hawaii, 81.3 years of life
California, 80.9 years
Connecticut, 80.8 years
Minnesota, 80.8 years
New York, 80.5 years
And here are the states with the lowest life expectancy:
Mississippi, 74.7 years of life
West Virginia, 75.3 years of life
Alabama, 75.4 years
Louisiana, 75.6 years
Oklahoma, 75.7 years
